Applied Linguistics Lead, Live Subtitles — based in Lisbon
Sofia leads applied-linguistics research at Live Subtitles. She designs the dual-subtitle workflows that turn passive viewing into active vocabulary acquisition, and she is responsible for the editorial standards on every learning-focused article on this site.
Sofia holds a PhD in second-language acquisition from the University of Lisbon, with field work at the Universidade de São Paulo. Before joining Live Subtitles she spent eight years teaching English and French to working adults in Portugal and Brazil, then four years building learning-experience research at two Lisbon-based EdTech companies. Her doctoral thesis examined the role of bilingual subtitles in incidental vocabulary acquisition among intermediate learners.
Every learning article Sofia publishes is grounded in named research and, where possible, in classroom-observed outcomes. Recommendations are framed in terms of measurable behaviour change (reduced pause-and-translate cycles, increased noticing events) rather than in marketing terms.
