Effective Date: August 11, 2026
Live Subtitles ("the App", "we") turns audio — from your microphone or from audio playing on your device — into real-time captions and translation. This policy covers the Live Subtitles apps for Windows, Android and iOS, as well as this website. The App is designed to process speech in real time while minimizing data collection, and it does not require an account.
| Data | Why | Where it goes | Stored? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio — from your microphone, or audio played by your device when you choose system-audio capture | Live speech recognition | Our speech recognition providers (see Third-Party Services), or processed entirely on your device in offline / on-device modes | No — streamed while a session is active, not recorded by us |
| Recognized and translated text | Producing captions and translation | Our translation providers or our own backend | No persistent storage of your content by us |
| Device identifier (see the section below) | Anti-abuse for free trial minutes, rating bonus, signing requests to our backend | Our backend | Yes — the identifier itself, on your device and on our backend |
| Diagnostic logs — device model, OS version, app version, selected languages, error messages | Debugging, reliability, crash reports | Grafana Loki (our logging provider) | Yes — for a limited diagnostic period |
| Analytics events — screens viewed, session start/stop, onboarding steps, paywall and purchase events, selected languages | Understanding which features are used and where users have trouble | Google Analytics for Firebase (mobile apps) | Yes — per Google's retention settings for our project |
| Purchases and minute balance — which product or subscription you bought, its price, and your remaining minutes | Tracking remaining usage and subscription status; understanding which plans people choose | Payments are processed by Google Play Billing or the Apple App Store — we never receive your card details. The mobile apps send purchase events (product id, price, result) to Google Analytics for Firebase | On Android and iOS the balance is stored on your device; on Windows it is held on our backend against your device identifier |
We do not collect your name, email address, contacts, precise location, photos, or payment details — card and billing information is handled entirely by Google Play or the App Store and never reaches us.
The App uses identifiers that relate to your device or app installation. In the Google Play Data safety form these are declared under the Device or other IDs data type.
To stop the same device from claiming free trial minutes or the rating bonus repeatedly, and to sign
requests to our backend, the App derives a stable identifier for your installation and sends it to
our backend. On Android it is a SHA-256 hash derived from the Android device identifier
(Settings.Secure.ANDROID_ID) combined with the app package name; where that identifier is
unavailable, a random per-installation id is generated and used instead. On other platforms it is a
stable per-installation identifier stored locally.
This value is an identifier only — it carries no name, email or contact information, and we cannot use it to identify you personally. It is stored on your device and on our backend.
Our Android and iOS apps use Google Analytics for Firebase, which assigns an app instance ID (a Firebase installation ID) to your app installation and sends it with analytics events.
We show no ads and do not use advertising identifiers. The Android app explicitly removes the
AD_ID permission from its manifest and never reads the Android advertising ID. We do not
use your data for advertising, marketing, or personalization, and we do not sell it.
You choose the audio source for each session. Audio is captured only while a session is active, and only to produce subtitles.
On Android, the App can draw a floating subtitle overlay over other apps. That permission is used only to draw the subtitle window; it does not read other apps' content.
Depending on your platform and the recognition or translation engine you select, audio and text may be transmitted to the following processors. Each handles data under its own privacy policy:
On iOS, Apple's on-device speech recognition can be used, and on Windows an offline Whisper model can be downloaded and run locally. In those modes your audio is processed on your device and is not sent to a speech recognition provider.
By using the App, you consent to the processing described in this policy, including transmission of audio and text to the third-party services listed above while a session is active.
We do not record or store your audio, transcripts, or translations on our servers — they are processed in real time and discarded. What we do retain is limited to: your device identifier (for as long as anti-abuse protection requires), diagnostic logs and crash reports (for a limited diagnostic period), analytics events including purchase events (per the retention period configured for our Firebase project), and — on Windows — your minute balance, held against your device identifier. App preferences are stored locally on your device, as is the minute balance on Android and iOS.
All data is encrypted in transit.
If you are located in the European Economic Area or the UK, you have the right to request access to your data, request its deletion, and withdraw consent at any time.
Because we do not store your audio or transcripts, there is nothing of that kind to retrieve or delete. For the data we do retain — your device identifier, diagnostic logs, and analytics events — contact us at the address below and we will delete the records associated with your installation. You can stop all further processing at any time by uninstalling the App.
live-subtitles.com uses Google Analytics / Google Ads tags and Yandex Metrica to measure traffic and campaign performance. These set cookies and collect standard web analytics data, including your IP address and browser information, under their own privacy policies (Google, Yandex). This is separate from the data the App processes.
The App is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
We may update this policy; the Effective Date above will change accordingly.
